Choosing the best call to action for your email marketing campaigns

When we send out an email campaigns as well as email newsletters we do so with the intent of converting a subscriber. Converting doesn’t necessarily mean that the email subscriber needs to buy a product or service. Conversion could mean many things and it depends on each company on how they define conversions. Conversions of email campaigns could mean any of the following:

• Downloading a PDF paper

• Viewing a message on a landing page

• Signing up for a newsletters or product updates

• Downloading software trial

• Purchasing a product

• Purchasing a service

• Renewing a service contract

As you can see conversions vary by the organizations that are sending email campaigns and the purpose of the email campaign but all conversions within an email campaigns start with a call to action. For those who do not know what a call to action is, a call to action is where the email recipient is being told what to do upon reading the email which is why it is very important for the email itself to have great content which will convince the reader to take action.  The reason I said the reader is told what to do and not asked to take action is because many times the email recipient is unsure of the steps that need to be taken or what action they should take. By telling the email recipient what to do you are encouraging them to take the action and feel good about the process thereby increasing conversion rates.

To be successful, a call-to-action should be straightforward, helpful and most of all promote value. In other words, upon looking at the call to action message the email subscriber should be encouraged to take action because the action they take will somehow add value to their life and this should be done in a short effective message.

Depending on the email newsletter, a call to action might take form as a link within the text, a button or both. In most cases the call to action is embedded within the content that is included with the campaign.

Below are some examples of call to action buttons. The call to action buttons on the left represent standard buttons that we have all seen and the call to action buttons on the right those which have been optimized to reflect the value the email subscriber would get upon taking action and clicking on the button.

Which of these calls to action buttons would you most likely click on to take action? Obviously the once you believe will add value to your daily activities.

Text call to action are very much the same where the text which is the content of the email has to show the reader that they are getting value once they click the link that is embedded within the content of the email newsletters. Obviously instead of a button it would be the text that the email recipient would be clicking on.

In my next post I will go through the top ten guiding principles that I believe produce the perfect call to action and are most likely going to help increase conversion rates the next time you send out your email campaigns.
